ABOUT OUR PROPERTY

CAL COT 1860.   TOFONA DE CAL SEC

“Cal Cot” is a detached house in the heart of the town, completely restored between 2018 and 2021 by members of the family. It has a surface area of approximately 100 square meters, distributed over three floors. Originally, the house consisted of two separate dwellings, one of which was demolished. They were connected internally by several doors, allowing passage from one to the other. The well, still present but sealed, is located directly beneath the stairwell leading to the first floor. It is a well, about 1.5 meters in diameter and approximately 20 meters deep, which was dug by hand by our ancestors. This well supplied water to the family, as did others in private homes, including the one located in the Plaza del Pozo (Well Square).

The house welcomes visitors in the ground floor hall with a reading nook, a comfortable armchair, and a beautiful wood-burning fireplace. The walls are adorned with old photographs of the town; a particularly striking one hangs by the fireplace, depicting the founder's son and first heir to the house, "Uncle Cot." In the display cabinet, you'll find glasses and stemware for enjoying a good wine with a delicious meal. A complete 12-piece dinnerware set is also available, ideal for special occasions. Two details stand out on the stone wall next to the fireplace: where the wooden coat rack now stands, there was once a door connecting the two houses, and the other door, with a wooden beam above it, led to the stable, where the mule rested after a long day's work. As mentioned earlier, the purpose was to connect the two family homes.

Upon passing through the double-leaf glass door, we enter a welcoming open-plan living room, kitchen, and dining area, perfect for cooking while enjoying pleasant conversation with other guests. A comfortable sofa and a wooden table for six complete the space. The fully equipped kitchen includes an oven, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, refrigerator/freezer, and all necessary utensils for cooking in good company. The ceilings in this room have been preserved in their original state. They are constructed with reed, straw, and mud vaults between the wooden beams. Local materials were used throughout, with only the essential foreign elements incorporated. The ground floor also includes a guest bathroom with a storage cupboard for cleaning supplies and a small 3m² cellar beneath the kitchen floor (a former rainwater cistern).

Original antique granite stairs lead to the first floor. These stairs were not originally configured this way and were modified during a renovation of the house in 1980. When a guest bathroom was built on the ground floor, the current staircase was constructed. On the first floor, a hallway leads to two spacious bedrooms: one with a double bed and the other with two single beds. This floor also has a fully equipped bathroom with two separate sinks, a hairdryer, bath towels, and a magnifying mirror. The niche in the bathroom's stone wall is where the oil lamp was traditionally kept to light the room.

In the room facing Carrer Major, there is another opening in the stone wall. This is another door that connected to the other dwelling on the upper level. Originally, there was no bathroom on this floor. During the 2021 renovation, a bathroom was added. Upon entering this bathroom, you can see a niche in the wall that was originally painted blue and served as a storage area for the family.
The upper floor is an attic with a small terrace of about 7 square meters and a laundry area equipped with a washing machine, sink, and ironing board. The terrace has a table and chairs for enjoying the outdoors. In many of the rooms of the house, the walls have been chipped away, revealing the original stone walls. The stones were mostly obtained from the Llastres River, and the clay was also from the local area. Today, the walls have been restored with hydraulic lime, a technique also used in the restoration of the town's old hospital.
